Today, it was windy. Not just a little breeze, mind you, but some serious WIND!!!
Here's Roy (that's what we call him) on one of his fave perches. You can't really tell but the swing was swinging and his feathers were a bit ruffled.
Roy, by the way, has taken over the inner camp. He struts around, gobbling and flapping his wings, going pretty much where ever he chooses. He seems convinced he's in charge.
A ruffled turkey not enough to convince you of a wind storm, huh?
Alrighty, then.
Remember the CAS site I mentioned earlier? Feel free to go back and click on the overhead picture for a "before" look. Look for the "V" shaped structure at the top of the picture.
Here's what it looked like this afternoon around 1400 (that's 2:00PM for you non military types). We'll be starting a midnight showing of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" this weekend!
The question you're asking yourself right now is "why in the heck did someone use a wing shaped structure for a sun shade in an area that regularly sees 50-60 MPH winds"? That would be an excellent question!! Particularly considering this is the second time this has happened in the last 4 months. In the interest of full disclosure, I must confess that it fell the other direction the first time.
"Luuuu seeeee, you go some splainin' to do". *
Lucy, in this case, is the US Army Corps if Engineers, the boneheads who accepted this site in the first place, with all its problems.
After the first time, the contractor said "we'll use more and bigger bolts. You won't have any more problems." Got it.
The bolts actually didn't fail. The concrete did.
Here neither bolt nor concrete failed. In this age old battle of unstoppable force against immovable object, the unstoppable force won.
So that's what happened today.
* I feel compelled to "splain" my rather arcane pop culture reference, particularly for my under 40 readers. Lucy, in this case, is Lucille Ball, the brilliant comedian of the golden age of TV. On her TV show, her husband, Ricky Ricardo was a nice Cuban boy. (He was Cuban in real life and her husband). One of his signature phrases was "Lucy, you've got some explaining to do" after she got into yet another jam. The phrase was said with his Cuban accent. Hence ,"Luuuuu seeeee, you got some splainin' to do".
That's all folks!

Hi David
Hi Micki. I hope all is well at Spirals and with you.
Hi David,
I've enjoyed reading your Blog this morning. FYI most of the anchor bolts we sell for similar structures are 96" in length. The footings are typically 10' in depth. The one picture had the size we sell for small residential stuff. Take care, and I've got your blog book marked.

I liked the RPG xmas tree (creative use of available resources! ha ha!) and the story about the collapsing wind shade. Interesting to see what life is like for you there. Our Marine is home and moved on to civilian life, but we think about you fellows every day. Be safe and I hope to keep reading your blog.
Great work.
